William Abdy is run by Georgina Abdy, from a family with what the company calls 400 years in Sheffield's steel and cutlery trade. That history includes the Abdy silversmiths of the 18th century and the Standard Jig and Tool company. The workshop is at Robot Works in the Cultural Industries Quarter.
There are two ranges: ivory-scaled Made in Sheffield knives, from a utility knife up to a wedding cake knife, and the Beauchief cutlery range, which runs from steak knives to children's cutlery. The knives are handmade in Sheffield by an experienced craftsman. Many materials are recycled steels and alloys.
Longevity is built in. The knives can be resharpened and rescaled, everything is tested in Georgina's own family kitchen, and the aim is pieces that can be "cared for and valued through generations".
